We believe every birthing person should feel centered and supported during their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experiences.
BirthX was founded by Alexis Diaz Commodore in 2019 in a burst of ambition that followed the grief of losing her father. Her father, Wilbur Commodore, passed away suddenly, and Alexis booked a small venue for the funeral, not anticipating a big turnout. However, when it came time for the service, the small space was bursting with unexpected attendees, most of whom knew him through his advocacy work in fighting for access to affordable housing in the city of Boston. Alexis was inspired by the number of people who came to pay their respects and began to wonder what kind of impact she could make with the modest inheritance left to her. Her father’s model large in her mind, Alexis turned her gaze to maternal health, where she had witnessed many weaknesses in the system of care. After discussing with friends and reflecting on her experiences as a doula and nurse, Alexis decided to develop an app, BirthX, with the intention of shifting birth culture in the United States.
The vision grew, and today, BirthX encompasses the app, a review platform, a website rich in resources, and a sms-chatbot, all focused on creating a more empowering, supportive, and personalized birth experience. By providing individuals with access to accurate, evidence-based information and support during their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey, BirthX is shifting the story of American maternal care.
Today, the BirthX team is focused on creating an accessible and inclusive space for expectant families to connect and share their experiences with maternal healthcare providers, as well as serve as a trusted resource on the pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience.

Our Founder | Alexis Diaz Commodore
From a young age, Alexis Diaz Commodore was drawn to compassionate and healing work. In high school, she spent time volunteering abroad, and by sixteen, she had decided to become a nurse. She holds a BSN in nursing from Drexel University and spent the majority of her nursing career working as a pediatric ER nurse, learning much about the ways empathy and relationship shape the patient experience. Eventually, Alexis was drawn to birth doula work. The same week she discovered doula work, Alexis signed up for a training program and was certified and working in no time. Doula work sparked her passion for supporting families through birth and helping them feel empowered, safe, and seen in their journey into parenthood.
She has had the opportunity to learn many styles of and approaches to care from traditional birth workers in Boston, Tanzania, and Ecuador. Alexis enjoys teaching others about the birth process, including the vital aspects of self advocacy and bodily autonomy while navigating the healthcare system. When Alexis is not attending births or working on BirthX, she can be found reading, spending time with family and friends, or traveling to new places. Alexis aspires to be a midwife and a serial entrepreneur one day.
